Warranty

American Process Technology, Inc. (APT) warrants its products to be free of defects in material and workmanship, for a period of thirty-six (36) months from the date of shipment. This warranty is extended to the original purchaser provided that the product has not been altered or neglected and is installed and used in a normal and appropriate manner as per APT, Inc. written instructions. The Buyer’s sole, and exclusive remedy for any defect or failure of performance of the product shall be the return of the product with proof of purchase and shipping charges prepaid to APT. APT, at it’s option, will repair, replace, or refund the purchase price of any product found upon inspection by APT to be defective. Closed Top Vertical Flat Bottom Storage Tanks (CVF)

Manufactured from linear polyethylene in one piece, seamless construction, this tank series is designed for either indoor or outdoor applications. Translucent white for convenient product level viewing; or opaque black, for sunlight sensitive chemicals and drinking water. Flat bottom design provides for easy and cost efficient installation. Two styles to choose from: 1.5 specific gravity IC or the 1.9 specific gravity IA

 

IC – Commercial Series is designed to handle contents that have a maximum specific gravity of 1.5 at 73° F.

IA – Industrial Series is designed to handle contents that have a specific gravity of 1.9 at 73° F.

 

· Excellent chemical and impact resistance

· Resin complies with U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulation 21 CFR 177.1520 (c) 3.1 and 3.2

· Tanks are UV Stabilized

· Comply with Federal Spill containment 40CFR 264.193 requirements

Material Selection Specifications

 

The following is a description of materials used in manufacturing our molded tanks and containers. Please consider these material characteristics when selecting the container for your application.

Polyethylene

A high quality thermoplastic that has outstanding resistance to both physical and chemical attack. The overall general toughness and excellent chemical resistance to a wide array of wet and dry industrial chemicals and food products make polyethylene ideally suited for storage tanks and containers.

Polyethylene is translucent and its natural color ranges from slightly off white to creamy yellow, depending on wall thickness and type. Ultraviolet light stabilizers are added for use in outdoor applications. Colors are available on request for a nominal up charge. When storing water, an opaque (non-translucent) color (preferably black) should be selected to prevent algae growth.

Linear Polyethylene

Linear Polyethylene is available as low, medium and high density. Most products offered in this catalog are molded of linear medium density polyethylene (LMDPE) and linear high density polyethylene (LHDPE). They have superior mechanical properties, high stiffness, excellent low temperature impact strength and excellent environmental stress crack resistance. The linear polyethylene used by TPS meets specifications contained in FDA regulation 21CFR177.1520 (c) 3.1 and 3.2 and so may be used as an article or a component of articles intended for use in contact with food, subject to any limitations in the regulations. Maximum operating temperature for linear polyethylene is 140° F.

Crosslinkable Polyethylene

Crosslinkable polyethylene is a high density polyethylene that contains a crosslinking agent which reacts with the polyethylene during molding, forming a crosslinked molecule similar to a thermoset plastic. This reaction improves toughness and environmental stress crack resistance. Crosslinked Polyethylene (XLPE) is not weldable and does not meet FDA requirement 21CFR177.1520. Maximum operating temperature of crosslinked polyethylene is 150° F.

Polypropylene

Polypropylene is a rigid plastic that has a higher operating temperature limit than polyethylene: 212°

Considerations to Material Selection

 

Elevated Temperatures

Continued or prolonged service with contents at elevated temperatures can shorten the life of a tank. The effects of the temperature will depend on the chemical content and its specific gravity, tank size and configuration, material of construction, wall thickness and if there are any external supports on the tank.

 

Exposure to Ultraviolet Light

Elevated temperatures can accelerate the embrittling process. TPS products are molded from materials utilizing the latest technology for UV stabilizers which greatly reduce the harmful effects of UV light. For greater protection, keep tanks out of direct sunlight or order dark colored tanks which will further retard the effect of UV light. Unprotected thermoplastics exposed to sunlight for an extended period of time, absorb ultraviolet (UV) light, which can cause discoloration, embrittlement and eventual cracking. Fluorescent lighting has a similar effect.

 

Environmental Stress Cracking

TPS tanks are molded virtually stress free, employing materials that are highly resistant to environmental stress cracking, and hence are less prone to cracking than fabricated tanks. Stress cracking agents are surface active materials. Certain surface active materials, although they have no chemical effect on polyethylene, can accelerate its cracking when under stress, such as liquid detergents and ultra pure water. Elevated temperatures tend to accelerate the cracking. Although all polyethylene's are subject to stress cracking, some are more resistant to it than others. The degree of stress on the plastic has a direct bearing on its resistance. Proper care should be taken to reduce stress at fittings, bands, tie down lugs, etc.

 

ASTM D-1998-91 Standard Specification or Polyethylene Upright Storage Tanks

 

This specification covers above ground, flat bottom, vertical, cylindrical tanks that have capacities from 500 gallons and greater and are molded in one piece seamless construction by rotational molding process. Requirements covered by this specification include material, properties, design, construction, dimensions, tolerance, workmanship and appearance.

Tank Installation and Application Guidelines

 

Although TPS’ tanks are extremely durable, improper handling and installation can result in damage to tank, fittings, and accessories.

Failure to comply with handling and installation instructions voids all warranties.

 

At delivery, inspect your tank immediately for defects or shipping damage. Any discrepancies, or product problems, should be noted on both the driver’s bill of lading and your packing list.

 

When unloading your tank from the delivery truck, avoid its contact with sharp objects. Forklift blades can cause significant damage if proper precautions are not taken. Do not allow tanks to be rolled over on the fittings. Large bulk storage tanks, whenever possible, should be removed from the truck bed by use of a crane or other suitable lifting device. OSHA regulation 29CFR 1910.178 through 1910.189 addresses specific standards for hoisting and lifting. Keep unloading area free of rocks, sharp objects, and other materials that could damage the tank. If the tank is unloaded on it’s side, carefully brace to prevent rolling.

 

Support the bottom of the tank firmly and completely. Concrete pads provide the best foundation. However, when seismic and wind factors are not being considered, tanks with a base load bearing of less than 800 pounds per square foot, or grater, require a firm, even, compacted bed of sand, pea gravel, or fine soil that won’t wash away. Tanks with a base load bearing of 800 pounds per square foot, or greater, require a reinforced concrete base. Steel support stands concentrate the loaded tank weight onto the stand leg pads. It is recommended that stands are mounted on a concrete base. Bolting of stands is necessary to prevent movement due to agitation, wind, seismic loads and accidental contact.

 

Install tanks in an area that is accessible. Ease of access and maintenance should be considered.

 

Hydro test by filling the tank with water prior to use, to prevent material loss through unsecured fittings, shipping damage, or manufacturing defects. Tanks should be tested for a minimum of 5 hours.

 

Plastic bulkhead fittings are designed to be hand tightened plus a ¼ turn. Over-tightening can cause fittings to leak. If fitting leaks, disassemble, remove and check for foreign material between gasket surfaces.

 

Support sides of rectangular tanks. In general, tanks with heights greater than 18" must be supported. However, specific applications must be considered: smaller tanks with contents that have high specific gravity and/or elevated temperatures must be supported.

 

Do not mount heavy equipment on tank sides. Do not allow weight on tank fittings. Fully support pipes and valves.

 

Use expansion joints to prevent damage from the expansion and contraction of the piping and tanks.

 

Tanks are designed for use only in the atmospheric storage of chemicals, never for vacuum or pressure applications.

 

Immersion heaters should never touch the walls of the tank. Minimum spacing should be maintained at 3" – 4" from the wall.

 

Be certain tank, fittings, and fitting gasket material are compatible with chemicals at the anticipated operating temperatures. Use the enclosed Chemical Resistance Charts as a guide. Contact our technical staff for information on chemicals not listed, or when uncertain conditions exist. This chart is a guide only, compound chemicals and temperature/concentrations may affect polyethylene differently. As an end user, you must confirm for yourself the applicability of polyethylene. TPS DOES NOT WARRANTY OR ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY for information provided as to the compatibility of polyethylene and specific chemicals. This should come from the chemical supplier.

 

Protect tanks from impact, especially at temperatures below 40° F.

 

DO NOT ENTER ANY TANK ALONE. Take proper precautions by consulting the OSHA Guidelines for approved procedures. Confined spaces must be considered hazardous.

 

Tank sizes as listed are nominal and calibrations on molded tanks are only approximates, but provide an indication of volume. Polyethylene tanks expand and contract which will effect volume. The degree in which this occurs depends on the size of the tanks, wall thickness, specific gravity of contents, temperature of contents and ambient temperatures.

 

ATTENTION – CHEMICALS ARE DANGEROUS The proper design of containers, pipes, valves, fittings and pumps will minimize your problems and maximize your safety.

 

VENTING – A general rule is: vent size equals largest inlet or outlet. Chemical fumes can be as corrosive and dangerous as the chemical. Venting chemical fumes and the effects of these fumes should be considered in your design.
